Selenium Poisoning in Livestock
نویسنده
چکیده
Selenium in certain soils ma y be taken up by plants in amounts sufficient to make forage toxic to animals. Seieniterous torage can be found in semiarid areas on soils t ypicall y derived from Cretaceous geologic material in the Western United States and Canada. Intoxication or iivestock b y seieniterous p lants nas been ciassiried as acute or cnronic. Acute :-,oisoning results from consumin g plants containinc hic2n efenium concentrations. Chronic selenium Poisonin g has peen aescribed in two torms: alkali disease and blind staggers. Alkali disease results from oroioneed in gestion or °Janis ,:ontainin g, 5-40 ppm selenium in inorganic or organic forms. Alkali disease causes loss or hair, lameness, weight loss and probably reduces reproductive efficienc y . Blind staggers is said to result trom the consumption or selenium indicator plants. These plants, in contrast to the nonaccumulators, contain selenium in water soluble, nonprotein forms. Blind staggers causes animals to wander, walk in circles, and to have difficulty in swallowing; in addition, it may cause blindness. Information is presented that questions the attribution of blind staggers to selenium toxicosis.

Pathogenesis and preventive treatment for animal disease due to locoweed poisoning.
Locoweeds are perennial herbaceous plants included in Astragalus spp. and Oxytropis spp. that contain the toxic indolizidine alkaloid swainsonine. The livestock that consume locoweed feeding can suffer from a type of toxicity called "locoism." There are aliphatic nitro compounds, selenium, selenium compounds and alkaloids in locoweed. The toxic component in locoweeds has been identified as swai...
متن کاملMetabolic interrelationships between arsenic and selenium
In 1938, Moxon discovered that arsenic protected against selenium toxicity. Since that time it has been shown that this protective effect of arsenic against selenium poisoning can be demonstrated in many different animal species under a wide variety of conditions. Antagonistic effects between arsenic and selenium have also been noted in teratologic experiments. Early metabolic studies showed th...
متن کاملSoils and geomedicine.
Geomedicine is the science dealing with the influence of natural factors on the geographical distribution of problems in human and veterinary medicine. Discussions on potential harmful impacts on human and animal health related to soil chemistry are frequently focused on soil pollution. However, problems related to natural excess or deficiency of chemical substances may be even more important i...
متن کاملEvaluation of yeast isolated from industrial waste to remove selenium and the use of biomass in livestock and poultry food
Background: Bioavailability is a good alternative to conventional physical and chemical methods for removing toxic metals from groundwater and wastewater. Methods: In this research, phenotypic and genotypic study was carried out on the use of isolated yeast from industrial effluents with the aim of eliminating Selenium biological and the production of biomass as a feed for livestock and poult...
متن کاملMinimum Lethal Dose of Selenium, as Sodium Selenite, for Horses, Mules, Cattle, and Swine
Following the discovery of selenium in numerous plants grown in certain areas of the north-central Great Plains and its identification as the cause of so-called alkali disease of livestock in those areas, a number of experiments have been undertaken to test its toxicity. Most of this work was designed to study the effect of continued feeding of small doses of selenium in various forms to small ...
